Theme Guide: Ninjago (2014)

Ninjago is back in 2014, and this time the ninjas have got problems with robots, or cyborgs maybe, called nindroids. The whole theme seems a bit more urban and techy now, which I suppose helps set it apart from the more nature-based Legends of Chima sets, while appealing to the same demographic. The ninjas all have messy hair now instead of wearing their usual headgear.

Eurobricks users The Creator and Duke have posted the images below, which continue after the jump:

70720 Hover Hunter
  • We've just got the back of the box image for this at the moment, but I think it gives a good enough idea of the set: Some sort of hover jet thing, with a nindroid, and the black ninja featuring a very nice torso print, which could have useful applications in many a historical MOC me thinks.
70721 Fighter Kai
  • A sleek red fighter jet, I think this is a step up from the previous Ninjago jet, 9442 Jay's Storm Fighter. Perhaps a bit more spaceship-like in its general design, which is fine by me. Nice new (I think) hair-piece on our red ninja too.

70722 OverBorg Attack
  • A motorbike battle. Not my favourite sort of vehicle, but at least the bad guy's one is a bit interesting, being built around a track. The bad guy himself is pretty cool, with that impressive Borg-style hairpiece, and his neat little spider chair. And the green ninja also seems to be sporting a nice new hair piece.

70723 Thunder Raider
  • A car and a mech in one set. The car seems to have some sort of platform at the back; I wonder if the mech can sort of, dock. Can't say I'm that excited by the bigger parts of this set, but I do like the nindroid's little turret; those legs have such a simple but ingenious construction. The torso prints on the ninjas in this set are pretty nice again too.

70724 NinjaCopter
  • So from the name, this is meant to be a sort of helicopter; I guess the gold disc in the middle is the oddly located rotor-blade. But it looks far more spaceshipy don't you think? Which is no bad thing! The little nindroid flying machines aren't too bad either for smaller models.

70725 Nindroid MechDragon
  • There have been quite a few dragons in the Ninjago range, but this is the first robot one! It doesn't have the same elegance of some of the earlier dragons, but I think it makes up for that with the coolness of the concept!

70726 Destructoid
  • No images of this one yet.
Finally, here's a bit of artwork showing the sets in fictional action, from the Lego Magazine (but posted online by Eurobricks user Delta 38):
