2015 Lego set rumours

Page created 15th August 2014. Last updated 31st August 2014.

Rumours are starting to surface of sets to come in 2015 and late 2014. I shall be updating this article as more news comes.

First up, new themes! Neoape has reported lists for several completely new lines for 2015:

Jurassic World
Well this one was a surprise, and one I was pretty sceptical about when rumours first started to surface - You see just last year it was announced Hasbro had secured the Jurassic Park construction toy license, ready to produce sets for the then untitled fourth Jurassic Park film, which we now know will be Jurassic World. Hasbro's Lego knock-off, Kre-O, has yet to deliver any legacy Jurassic Park sets, and then we hear Lego has somehow secured the license - Very unusual! No set names have been released yet, but Neoape suggest there will be five different Jurassic World sets.

Elves
Another surprise is Elves, which going by the set names seem likely to be aimed at girls, and one might imagine will use the Friends-style minidolls. Neoape list six sets in this new theme:
  • 41071 Aira’s Creative Workshop
  • 41072 Naida’s Spa Secret
  • 41073 Naida’s Adventure Ship
  • 41074 Azari & The Magic Bakery
  • 41075 Treetop Hideaway
  • 41076 Farran & The Crystal Hollow

    Supercars
This new car-based theme might be new TV tie-in too, Brick Fantatics seem to think this could be a Top Gear theme. Seven sets are coming, whatever it's called:
    • 75899 LaFerrari
    • 75908 458 Italia GT2
    • 75909 McLaren P1
    • 75910 Porsche 918 Spyder
    • 75911 McLaren Mercedes Pitstop
    • 75912 Porsche 911 GT Finish
    • 75913 F14 & Scuderia Ferrari

Theme Guide: Lego Minifigures, Series 12

Offiicial images of Series 12 of the Collectable Minifigures are out (via Lego's Facebook page), giving us a good look at all the new characters.

There are the usual mix of historical, contemporary, and fantastical persons, with a mix of completely new characters, and variations of previous ideas.

Continue below for a close look at each one the new characters, which will be entering the real world in October.

      Battle Goddess
      • While Lego stubbornly persist in not delivering a full on Greek mythology theme, they have supplied a nice assortment of ancient history characters over the course of the Minifigures range. This might be my new favourite ancient female minifigure - I'll be getting multiplies for that lovely shield alone, but the whole ensemble is pretty cool.

I'm not generally a fan of the fabric skirts, but I like the interesting geometric design here, and could imagine that being useful for a more contemporary (and indeed other periods) minifigure outfit too. The white plume, previously seen on the Roman Commander in red, also gives some nice new options. In fact every detail of this is just really nice; the printed sandal-toes, the new torso print, new helmet piece, and face with golden lipstick. Lots of potential, both as presented and for parts.

I could imagine this lady teaming up with the previous Warrior Woman, or maybe being part of the same opera company that the Viking Woman works for.
      Genie Girl
      • A new genie to join her male counterpart from all the way back in Series 6. While our new female genie has an overall blue colour-scheme, like her predecessor, her flesh is yellow, making her a little more versatile; that torso is a belly-dancer waiting to happen.

The previous lamp part also returns, while the wispy tail gets a bit of sparkle printing to add some extra magic. Note her arms are also the new half coloured variety.

      Next Collectable Minifigures series revealed

The full line-up of the next Collectable Minifigure series has been revealed. Argos added a listing, complete with an image of all sixteen new characters, which are (as named by Grove Bricks): Video Game Guy, Prospector, Rock Star, Swashbuckler, Jester, Fairytale Princess, Spooky Girl, Pizza Delivery Man, Hun Warrior, Genie Girl, Lifeguard, Wizard, Dino Tracker, Space Miner, Battle Goddess, and Piggy Guy.

Another pretty cool selection, with lots to appeal, whatever your preferences. Personally I'm most drawn to historical characters this time around, especially the Battle Goddess and Hun Warrior. A shame though that Lego are persisting in presenting women as a minority group... (five out of sixteen here).

Argos are listing this as Series fourteen, which would mean The Lego Movie and The Simpsons series are being counted as twelve and thirteen (rather than being separate from the series count). An earlier promo image posted on a Japanese Lego blog, which gives us another look at a few of the new characters, seems to describe them as Series 12. I guess we'll have to wait to see the packaging to find out what number Lego have decided.

      New Minifgures Online trailer

Funcom have launched a new website for their forthcoming Minifigures Online game. The website has a few partially populated sections, such as character profiles, revealing each minifigure's special abilities, and a guide to the "worlds" of the Minifigures game (although so far only Pirate World is previewed). You can also sign up to take part in the beta testing of the game. And they have released a new trailer demonstrating some of the game's features:

For more on the Minifigures game, see my earlier report, with the previously release trailer and screenshots.

More The Lego Movie sets revealed

Hot on the heels of the new The Lego Movie trailer, Lego are starting to reveal more of sets tied into the film. Including series 12 of the Collectable Minifigures, which are all characters from the film:

There look like a great set of characters; I'm glad to see being tied to The Lego Movie hasn't reduced the range of figures on offer this series. Brick Fanatics released the image, and as well as details of who all these are:

      • Calamity Drone
      • Gail the Construction Worker
      • Larry the Barista
      • Abraham Lincoln
      • Panda Guy
      • Velma Staplebot
      • William Shakespeare
      • Taco Tuesday Guy
      • “Where are my Pants?” Guy
      • Wiley Fusebot
      • President Business
      • Wild West Wyldstyle
      • Hard Hat Emmet
      • Scribbe-Face Bad Cop
      • Mrs. Scratchen-Post
      • Marsha Queen of the Mermaids

Of course all these characters also give us some new insights into the film. We've got several western characters here (I love Wyldstyle's dress!), and several robots (two indeed fit into both groups), as well as plenty of city people and some more fanciful and historical characters.

Talking of fanciful, Yahoo Movies have revealed another of the sets based on the film: The gloriously colourful and pretty absurd 70803 Cloud Cuckoo Palace, which includes the brick-built Uni-Kitty (who it appears has a new tail element). There's also another robot in there, alongside Emmet, Wyldstyle, a snail, and a flower catapult!

UPDATE: Hollywood Reporter have revealed another set, 70809 Lord Business' Evil Lair, which comes with the extra tall Lord Business (with his extra long cape). Also included are Emmet and Vitruvius, and some new characters; Ma Cop, Pa Cop, wrestler/master builder El Macho Wrestler, and Biznis Kitty, a different (corrupted?) version of Unikitty. The set appears to include a TV set for Where-Are-My-Pants Guy, a corporate boardroom, and a massive tube of glue (powered by a massive nine-volt battery), surely used by Lord Business in his nefarious plans. Note Ma Cop and Pa Cop seem to have been glued, with an excellent use of the Toy Story army men bases in clear as a blob of glue!

There are seventeen sets planned based on the film, continue after the jump for a reminder of the other sets so far rumoured in the range:

Theme Guide: Lego Minifigures, Series 11

The eleventh series of the Collectible Minifigures is set for release next month. Lego have now released official images of all the new characters, giving us a closer look at yet another irresistible collection of new minifigures, with some cool new parts, and subjects never before rendered in Lego form.

As we saw when scans of the leaflet for this series were posted online a couple of weeks ago, this series comes in green packaging.

Continue reading for thoughts and analysis of each figure in the new series.

      Yeti
      • My absolute favourite of this series is the oh-so-cute little yeti. The cool blue details on this guy make him look suitably icy, including the blue lollypop - The first time that food part has been offered in a blue I believe.

This is at least Lego's second Yeti, having previously released a big-figure version in the Orient Expedition set 7412 Yeti's Hideout. This new version obviously somewhat less imposing than the previous larger design, but has so much more character!

The only place I think they missed a trick here is that the face appears to be printed on the new molded headpiece. It might have been nice for the blue part to have been an opening, with a standard minifigure head inside; allowing Lego to include an interesting alternative head print hidden behind the hair.
      Island Warrior
      • Here we have Lego's latest minifigure inspired by the world's cultures; in this case a Polynesian islander with an impressive tiki-style mask.

Perhaps a perfect companion for the hula dancer from way back in series 3, but I'm sure this guy is reminding most Lego fans of the classic Pirates: Islanders series; a new native person for the pesky pirates to deal with.
      Scientist
      • A rare, and very welcome, non-stereotypical female minifigure! They still managed to sneak in a purple top beneath the lab-coat, and a purple pen in her pocket, but that's pretty mild compared to the garish pink that adorns so many of the females in the Minifigures range!

Trumping Series 4's male "Crazy Scientist", this professional looking researching comes with two flasks, ready to equip her Lego lab.

Hopefully we'll see more figures like this both in future Collectible Minifigures series, and if the female minifigures project passes the Cuusoo review.

      Collectible Minifigures Series 11 revealed

The forthcoming eleventh series of Collectible Minifigures has been revealed! Brickset posted scans of the usual leaflet from one of the packets, from a user who found them in Poland already. Check out another brilliant collection of characters:

I'm impressed Lego continue to make series after series of such appealing characters. My personal highlights here are that amazing yeti, the very impressive Tikki warrior (what a brilliant mask), and hurrah for a female scientist!

Here's the other side of the leaflet, which as usual highlights some of the accessories included.

      The Lego Movie

Warner Brother have released the trailer and teaser poster for The Lego Movie, which is due out next February. The film comes from writers and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who previously brought us the charming, hilarious, and beautiful, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (one of my very favourite films).

As the trailer demonstrates, the movie pulls in Lego characters and designs from the entire range of licenses and original themes, new and old - It's just as if the world of The Lego Movie takes place in your own eclectic Lego collection. There are some nice new character, location, and vehicle designs too, which surely will be translated into real world sets as well.

Voice talents include Chirs Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson, and Morgan Freeman. Here's the official synopsis:
The 3D computer animated adventure tells the story of Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

UPDATE: An international version of the trailer has also been released, it's a bit shorted but has a few extra scenes (have added more screencaps from this below as well):

Here are some screencaps from the trailer (after the jump), which hopefully gives us some clues to a few future Collectible Minifigures (there is definitely a panda costume character among the crowds, and several new historical characters), or sets based on the film - The new characters for the film have some especially nice character designs, plus there seems to be a Western sequence:

Theme Guide: Lego Minifigures, Series 10

Lego have updated their Minifigures website with all the details for series ten. So the next batch should be finding its way to us soon. To celebrate the new series (and/or as a way of continuing to drive sales of the series), this tenth collection has one extra figure; Mr Gold, an all gold figure, which is distributed randomly among the usual assortment. There will only be five-thousand Mr Golds in the entire production run. Let's have a look at the latest batch of brilliant new Lego characters on the way (more after the jump):

      Bubblebee Girl
      • Continuing my favourite recurring theme in the Minifigures series, we have the latest character in an animal costume; this time a really cute bee! Our bee-girl has a pair of wings, similar to the previous Fairy, and comes with a pot of honey, reusing the Leprechaun's pot of gold, with a lovely little Winnie the Pooh style bee printed on the side. I'll definitely be getting multiple of this one, I need a little troupe of bee-dancers!
      Roman Commander
      • Another of my favourite subjects in the Minifigures range, the all to rarely seen in other parts of Lego, ancient world figures (seriously Lego, when are you going to give a full on historic Roman/Greek mythology theme?). This is the second time we've had a member of the Roman military, but this time he's got that important missing element from the first Roman Solider; the plume on his helmet. Worth the wait I think, what a brilliant figure; I'm sure we'll all be getting a legion's worth of this guy.
      Sea Captain
      • One of the things I love about the Minifigures series, is that we sometimes get an animal thrown in as an accessory - This time we get a new gull. Even if this was just a blank yellow figure I'd want multiples to build up a flock! The actual figure here is quite good too though, our new sea captain will make a great companion for the sailors, and other nautical characters that we've had over the series. His hat will be a welcome addition to the minifigure head-wear range, and he has lovely detailing with the printed sleeves.

      VIP Exclusive Lego Minifigure set

Lego have announced the results of the vote for a best-of the collectable minifigures set. Or rather, they have announced the five figures they are re-releasing as a set; the wording of their statement makes me question if they are necessarily the most voted for:
We are delighted to announce the line-up for the VIP Exclusive LEGO® Minifigures set, to be released in summer 2012. We took the results from our vote poll back in July last year and wherever possible, selected the characters that our VIPs wanted brought back - this time with some unique coloured elements!
The five figures are: the Elf, Gorilla Suit Guy, Space Villain, Mummy, and Fisherman. Rather disappointingly all are from the third series, so no return for such early classics as the Spartan, Zombie, Cheerleader, Caveman, Mime, or Mariachi.

Based on that image the new coloured parts seem to be the gold scorpion (instead of much more unusual dark red from the original), a black hat instead of dark blue for the fisherman, and grey or silver fish instead of the original green, plus darker metallic artificial limbs for the space villain.

News of when the set will be released is to be announced in a future VIP email. So sign up if you haven't already.

On top of the disappointing selection of figures here I'm also sad that this set isn't what I initially imagined it might be when I read the email announcing the vote: I dreamed that the winning figure or figures would have a set built around them (a little bit of scenery or a small vehicle relevant to them). Now how much cooler would that have been, even for these five...
