Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens video game on the way!

StarWars.com have announced a new Lego Star Wars video game, based on The Force Awakens. Due out in June, this will be the fourth Lego Star Wars video game from TT Games, the first of which launched the brilliant Lego video game series! In addition to a light hearted Lego adaptation of the film, the game also promises to:
...offer new story content exploring the time period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, adding additional insight into the movie and its characters
The game will also offer new game-play features including:
...the “Multi-Builds” system, where players can choose from multiple building options to advance the game; new blaster combat, in which players use surrounding environments to drive back the First Order during intense Blaster Battles; and high-speed flight gameplay through arena-based battles and dogfights in space, while gamers utilize a multitude of vehicles along the way, including the legendary Millennium Falcon. In addition, enemies can now build, too, allowing stormtroopers to support each other with reinforcements, air strikes, and heavy artillery, adding another layer of danger to the game.
Here's the trailer, itself a parody of the film's trailer, packed full of typical Lego humour. Continue below for the first details of variant editions of the game!

Adorable Star Wars minifigures wearing ship costumes!

Behold one of the most adorable series of Star Wars MOCs ever: Minifigures wearing tiny costume versions of their ships! These delightful miniature designs were created by Nick Chen, who posted them on Flickr. I've picked out a few of my favourites below, but there are many more, representing characters and ships from most of the Star Wars films.

Lego's 2015 Comic Con exclusive sets

Page created 24th June 2015. Last updated 1st July 2015.

Lego have announced three sets which will be available next month exclusively at the San Diego Comic Con. Based on some of the most popular of Lego's licenses, there will be a set each from Star Wars, DC Comics, and Marvel Comics. Each will be available in limited numbers at the convention, with attendees having to enter a ballot to even get a chance to buy them! A few will also be given away in competitions via Lego's Twitter - So there's a slim chance of getting them from afar. Continue below to check them all out.

UPDATE: Hoth Bricks have now released packaging images for all the sets too.

My personal favourite is the DC Comics set, a wonderfully retro Lego recreation of the cover of Action Comics #1, the first comic to feature Superman, back in 1938! Collider revealed details of this set, while the Lego Twitter shared the box:

Lego Star Wars The Force Awakens tease

We have our first tease at Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens sets, thanks to the teaser page in the latest Lego catalogue. What we see is mostly a pile of bricks, which certainly have the right colours and abundance of curvy parts to be the speeder-bike seen in the trailer. What we can see for sure is the minifigure scale BB-8 droid, which like the real-world counterpart has an amazing amount of character for a head on a sphere!

One The Force Awakens set has been fully revealed already, Entertainment Weekly recently revealed several different toy versions of the First Order stormtrooper, including the Lego Battle Figures buildable action figure:

You will have to wait until January to get the stormtrooper, but the first wave of Battle Figures is due out this year, continue after the jump for the Lego catalogue page previewing all the characters that will be available:

New Yoda Chronicles episode

There's a new episode of the Lego Star Wars animation series The Yoda Chronicles on the way. Clash of the Skywalkers will see Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader dueling, with the usual Lego animation wit and silliness. Here's the description of the episode (via Ain't It Cool News):
The enraged Emperor sends Darth Vader and his entire fleet to find and destroy Luke as revenge for his destruction of the Holocrons. Luke, however, finds inspiration from the last remaining Holocron -- a daring move pulled off years earlier by his father, Anakin. The emboldened Luke uses Anakin’s daring move to lure Vader and the Imperial Fleet into a trap that could turn the tide for the Rebellion… or lead to disaster.
Unusually it appears the outcome of the confrontation is down to viewer preferences, as endings for both sides have been animated, to be broadcast as determined by social media votes.

Several trailers have been released, check out more after the jump:

UCS Slave 1 revealed

Due out later this year is a new Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series rendition of Boba Fett's Slave 1. Eurobricks forum member just2good has posted images of the set, revealing it to the world for the first time.

The most detailed Lego rendition of the Slave 1 yet comes with oodles of curvy pieces, many in dark red and shades of green, plus a big new cockpit window piece. The set is also presented at minifigure scale, and comes with four minifigures, plus Han Solo in carbonite. Check out the stand on the box-art too, which will display the ship in upright flight position.

2015 Lego set rumours

Page created 15th August 2014. Last updated 31st August 2014.

Rumours are starting to surface of sets to come in 2015 and late 2014. I shall be updating this article as more news comes.

First up, new themes! Neoape has reported lists for several completely new lines for 2015:

Jurassic World
Well this one was a surprise, and one I was pretty sceptical about when rumours first started to surface - You see just last year it was announced Hasbro had secured the Jurassic Park construction toy license, ready to produce sets for the then untitled fourth Jurassic Park film, which we now know will be Jurassic World. Hasbro's Lego knock-off, Kre-O, has yet to deliver any legacy Jurassic Park sets, and then we hear Lego has somehow secured the license - Very unusual! No set names have been released yet, but Neoape suggest there will be five different Jurassic World sets.

Elves
Another surprise is Elves, which going by the set names seem likely to be aimed at girls, and one might imagine will use the Friends-style minidolls. Neoape list six sets in this new theme:
  • 41071 Aira’s Creative Workshop
  • 41072 Naida’s Spa Secret
  • 41073 Naida’s Adventure Ship
  • 41074 Azari & The Magic Bakery
  • 41075 Treetop Hideaway
  • 41076 Farran & The Crystal Hollow

    Supercars
This new car-based theme might be new TV tie-in too, Brick Fantatics seem to think this could be a Top Gear theme. Seven sets are coming, whatever it's called:
    • 75899 LaFerrari
    • 75908 458 Italia GT2
    • 75909 McLaren P1
    • 75910 Porsche 918 Spyder
    • 75911 McLaren Mercedes Pitstop
    • 75912 Porsche 911 GT Finish
    • 75913 F14 & Scuderia Ferrari

Continue after the jump for news of other returning and regular themes:

      Another exclusive The Ghost microfighter

Fan Expo Canada have announced a new exclusive Star Wars Rebels set that will be available at the convention next week. A small version of The Ghost, in a Microfighter-style set will be available, similar to those that have been offered at other conventions - Indeed very similar; it's basically the same set that was offered at the San Diego Comic Con, albeit with Kanan Jarrus minifigure included instead of the droid Chopper.

There is also a Twitter competition to win copies of the set, though that too is exclusive to Canadian residents.

New sets revealed at Comic Con

Several new sets coming out later this year and in 2015 will be revealed by Lego at Comic Con this week. They have also previewed a few of these online, so here's a round up of the new sets:

Due out later this year, alongside the release of The Battle of the Five Armies, the final film in The Hobbit trilogy, will be The Lonely Mountain. The set centers on Smaug and his occupation of the dwarf mines. As well the dragon the 866-piece set includes Bilbo Baggins, Balin, Dwalin, Ori, and Gloin (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Due next year will be the Wookiee Gunship from Star Wars Rebels. It comes with a trio of Wookies, and the Jedi Kanan Jarrus. (vis MTV).

Also due early next year is 76025 Green Lantern vs Sinestro, the latest addition to the DC Super Heroes range. This set comes with, as the name implies, the Green Lantern, Sinestro, plus a cool white-space-suited Batman. The ship here has lots of transparent green parts, and that little clip thing at the bottom of the image apparently spring launches Batman into flight (via Kotaku).

Announced a few days ago, there's the huge UCS Tumbler set, due out in September. You can see lots of images, and a designer video, in my previous report.

There's also the promise of a new 2015 The Lego Movie set being revealed. Yahoo Movies have posted a small image showing Batman, Angrykitty with a Micro Manager and robot skeleton. Presumably these items will all accompany some other creation though, so I expect here's more news to come on this set. UPDATE: FBTB have confirmed this is in fact the full extent of the set, which is called 70817 Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack.

The Lego press release about Comic Con also mentioned the fourth series of Mixels sets will be revealed too. I'll update as further news comes. UPDATE: And indeed they were, they showed real models at the Comic Con (The Brick Fan has some photos), while the Lego Facebook page posted these renderings. It seems the tribes are something like, night, fire (again), and Buzz Lightyear:

      Lego's Comic Con display pieces

As well as sets you can buy, Lego are also showing of lots of different display pieces at the San Diego Comic Con this week.

First up, and perhaps the most impressive build, is Smaug, the dragon from The Hobbit, which took more than eighty-three-thousand bricks to complete, and comes complete with a little Bilbo Baggins (via When Nerds Attack):

Less of a giant, but coming at life-size, is Chopper, the new droid from the Star Wars animated series, Rebels (via MTV):

Continue after the jump for many more builds, including more Star Wars, Super Heroes, Ninja Turtles, and Ghostbusters:

      Lego's Comic Con exclusive sets

Lego have announced several different sets which are available exclusively at the San Diego Comic Con this week. There will also be a number of minifigures that will on offer in a raffles throughout the event, or for those not attending, via a twitter raffle (follow @LEGO_Group for that).

There will be three sets on offer, all are limited to just a thousand copies each. The most eye-catching (even for someone who isn't especially excited by Batman or cars), is the classic TV batmobile, which comes with Batman and Robin. It must be agonising for Batman fans that this fun little car will be such a rarity. (Images via FBTB)

To celebrate the launch of Star Wars Rebels there will be a mini-version of the hero-ship, the Ghost. Like previous exclusives, and the Micro-fighter range, the ship will house an out-of scale minifigure too, in this case the new short astromech droid, Chopper. (Image via StarWars.com)

Finally, as I've previously reported separately, there will be a Guardians of the Galaxy set. Rocket Raccoon’s Warbird. (Image via Wall Street Journal)

On top of the sets, four minifigures, to be available via raffle, have also been announced. They are:

UCS AT-AT walker gets to Lego Ideas review

Another project has passed the ten-thousand supporter mark, so now a Ultimate Collector Series AT-AT walker awaits consideration from the Lego Ideas review board.

This has to be one of the biggest projects ever to get through to the review stage, and for that reason alone I think it's chances are slim. Another Star Wars UCS proposal, a Jawa Sandcrawler, has already tried, and failed, to get through the review. I think the AT-AT walker is arguably a much more iconic design (certainly a more interesting one!), but that could also be a limiting factor - Many Star Wars projects have got to review, but none have so far been produced as an Ideas set. I think the only chance a Star Wars project has on Ideas is something very creative, that wouldn't be likely to already have been considered by Lego for production as a set (such as the brick-build lightsaber props project, which is also awaiting review). The AT-AT walker has been released many times by Lego already, and while it is an obvious candidate for UCS treatment, I'm sure all that means is Lego have already thought about it and have it on some to-do list for future sets.

The project design is none-the-less very impressive. You can see more of it in the creator, Peter Brookdale (aka Cavegod)'s Flickr gallery.

Super Heroes invade the Death Star

Check out this fantastic MOC of the 10188 Death Star set. Flickr user r5_n2 has taken the basic layout of the Death Star set, and filled it with super heroes (and SpongeBob SquarePants) getting up to their antics:

Here are my favourite locations from the build, but be sure to check out r5_n2's Flickr set for details of every part of this reimagined Death Star; it's full of jokes and quirky scenes:

2014 sets revealed at Comic Con

Lego have teased a couple of sets due out next year in reveals at Comic Con. One of the DC Super Heroes sets will be Batman: The Riddler Chase. USA Today posted this image, showing a Batmobile, and a dragster for the Riddler. The Riddler himself is a relatively rare minifigure, while I believe The Flash, who is also included in the set, is getting his Lego debut here:

Lego is also previewing a Star Wars set, a new AT-AP. The design seems to have grown an extra leg since Lego's last version, back in 2008, it also comes with more figures, droids and a Wookie as well as a Clone trooper. FBTB posted this image:

      Comic Con mini-sets

FBTB has posted details and images of two Comic Con exclusive Lego sets. Both sets are essentially smaller versions of regular sets. From The Hobbit there's a Micro Scale Bag End (with a normal-sized Frodo minifigure), the smaller brother of 79003 An Unexpected Journey. While the Star Wars offering is a JEK-14 Mini Stealth Fighter, a smaller version of the forthcoming original Lego design from The Yoda Chronicles, 75018 Jek-14's Stealth Starfighter, which includes the super cool JEK-14 figure, with a transparent arm! Check them out:

Next Cuusoo set announced, and more sets in the running

The latest Cuusoo review results have been announced, of the three sets that made it to the review stage in Autumn last year (after getting ten-thousands supporters on the Cuusoo website), one will be going into production, with second still being considered. The set that is definitely going ahead is the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover, based on the current NASA robotic rover mission on Mars, and designed by one of the engineers from the actual rover. This set builds on something of a science/exploration sub-theme within the successful Cuusoo projects to date, following on from the Shinkai 6500 Submarine, and the Hayabusa spacecraft. The set is likely to be quite similar to the design submitted, as it has been deemed well built and at about the right scale for the size set Lego expect to produce. Here are their comments on the project:
After analyzing the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover project, we learned that this product has niche appeal and strong demand from the space and education communities. The product aligns well with the LEGO Group’s mission to “inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow,” including those who will build our future in outer space.

Like the Back to the Future Time Machine, which was approved in the Summer Review, the model presented in this project is built very closely to the LEGO Group’s design standards and so the final product will be very close to Perijove’s original design. It has a high play value, it fits well with voters’ price expectations, and we’ve secured the rights from NASA to release this project as the next LEGO CUUSOO set.

For these reasons, the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover project has passed the LEGO Review, and has been selected for production as the next LEGO CUUSOO set. Pricing and availability are still being determined.
There is already a chance to win this set! Lego's reBrick website and NASA are inviting Lego builders to to make models based on future NASA missions to win the Curiosity set, once it's out, and some other NASA goodies.

Two other sets were up for review alongside the Curiosity:
      • Thinking with Portals, a series of Lego game proposals based on the video game Portal 2. Despite announcing the review results, they've not quite finished looked at the possibilities of doing something with this yet, so a set might still be forthcoming.
      • USC Sandcrawler from Star Wars. Lego have ruled out the Sandcrawler, citing issues with their Star Wars license. It also seems to me that this would have been a ludicrously large set. There has previously been a Sandcrawler set, which while not accurate minifigure scale was still pretty significant.

Cuusoo also released a video explaining these latest review results, check it out:

In other Cuusoo related news, a Brickset reader noted that the Minecraft set (the third Cuusoo set to be produced) has been renamed in Lego's database, from "Micro World", to "Micro World - The Forest". This appears to be setting the stage for additional Minecraft sets; a Hungarian website, Kockamania, has reported a rumour of two new sets being planned.

Meanwhile, several other projects have gotten through to the review stage recently. Continue after the jump to check them out:

      What a kraken MOC

One of my favourite things to do with a new Lego set is to modify it; tweak and/or improve the design, swap out colours or parts for things I think look better, expand it, or build an environment around it. Iain Heath has gone to town with that sort of idea, taking the big grey wedge that is 10221 Super Star Destroyer, and adding a big red cephalopod to devour it!

Here's the nice in-universe story explaining this alien attack:
A rare species of Space Kraken, known to exist only in the vast Dreighton Nebula, were sought out using the the Jedi's most powerful clairvoyants, and brought under the Alliance's control by flying super-computers directly into their brains. Many brave Ewok pilots were unwillingly sacrificed to accomplish this difficult task. Far from being cruel to the Kraken, this arrangement was completely symbiotic, as the creatures had evolved to prey on starships, their diet being composed entirely of metals such as quadanium steel.
I love the details in this; the hull plating being bent back, the little big of engine tumbling away, and the noble Star Destroyer making a last ditch effort to save the day by ramming into the mega-octopus. This beautiful creation now lives at Heath's place of work, for all his lucky colleges to enjoy. Here it is on display:

You can see a few more photos in Heath's Flickr gallery.

      The Yoda Chronicles

Lego are up to something this year, something called The Yoda Chronicles. Building on the success of the excellent Lego Star Wars animated films, The Padawan Menace and The Empire Strikes Out, they are returning for a whole trilogy of films! Here's how Cartoon Network describe them:
LEGO Star Wars returns in epic style with THE YODA CHRONICLES, a thrilling, funny and action-packed new LEGO Star Wars story told in three animated TV specials! Set in the “Prequel” Star Wars timeline, THE YODA CHRONICLES stars the one and only Yoda—the Jedi Master who has seen it all, done it all, and taught generations of Jedi Knights—in an all-new adventure. With the help of a fresh class of Padawans, Yoda leads the Jedi in a desperate fight to stop Darth Sidious and his minions from creating a new super-weapon that could crush the Republic and win the war for the forces of Evil.
It's not just new animations though, they're making a whole new sub-brand, with the original story of the film due to give us new designs for Lego sets, starting with 75018 Jek-14's Stealth Starfighter. They are also bring out a Yoda Chronicles book, which promises to give us a look into the Lego life of Yoda. Here's a look at the exclusive minifigure that comes with the book, a Special Forces Clone Trooper (revealed today by USA Today), plus a sample spread from the book (as seen in the DK catalogue), the cover is at the top of the article:

On top of the longer animated episodes the Yoda Chronicles brand is also being used for some of the latest Lego Star Wars short animations, which highlight recent sets with light-hearted little adventures for the Star Wars minifigures. Here's the trailer for the awesome looking longer films. The shorter promo films play after in the playset of all the Yoda Chronicles animations so far:

The latest exclusive and promotional Lego sets

In my attempts to keep up to date on all the Lego sets that are to exist I have got a bit behind with the odd promotional and exclusive sets. So here's a little catch up:

The big news, a couple of months ago, was that the first Lego CUUSOO proposal in the international version of the platform got to the 10000 vote mark, and was oked by the Lego team. Coming some time this summer will be a Lego set based on the game Minecraft:

      21102 Minecraft Micro World

There are a couple of Lego shop at home special sets on the way too. Here's a video with the designers of the big new R2-D2 set:

      10225 R2-D2

The other is their latest aircraft sculpture; a new Sopwith Camel, a sequel of sorts to the previous 2001 edition.

      10226 Sopwith Camel

Also in the more specialist arena is the latest set in Lego's Architecture range: Big Ben. This one should be out just in time to cash in on extra British tourism for the Olympics. I'd rather have the entire Palace of Westminster though; looks a bit odd just chopping off the end bit.

      21013 Big Ben

Also targeting tourists is a new airline promotional set, a neat little glider to add to your city airport. These are currently available from Virgin Atlantic and TUIfly.

      4442 Glider

Getting even more exclusive, there's a special mini Statue of Liberty set available from the New York Lego store, and several newly opening Lego stores have had limited supplies of Lego Store Lego sets:

      40026 Statue of Liberty
      3300003 Brand Retail Store

Also exclusive to Lego stores, as well as Lego's online shop, will be two promotional minifigures with purchases of Star Wars and Super Heroes sets, during in promotional periods:

      TC-14

      Hulk
Already out in the wild is a special Darth Maul minifigure, so far made available at the New York Toy Fair and Legoland Windsor:

      Darth Maul
At some point there is also to be a single figure release of the Ninjago minifigure Rattla. (I'm hoping this will be a release I can get hold of as it's a figure I really like for it's Stargate Jaffa looks, but comes in sets I'm not interested in)

      30088 Rattla

Finishing off the minifigure releases, there has also been a pack of firefighters at bulk out your city team:

      853378 Firefighters

Finally there have been a few seasonal releases for Easter and Valentine's Day, plus there's a tiny cake due at some point:

      40029 Valentine's Day Box
      40030 Duck with Ducklings
      40031 Bunny and Chick
      40048 Birthday Cake
